FAULKNER On December 17, 1911 at the residence of her son (J D Faulkner), Elizabeth, relict of the late John Lees Faulkner, aged 91. [Bay Of Plenty Times, Volume XL, Issue 5746, 18 December 1911, Page 4] It is our sad duty to record the death of Mrs Elizabeth Faulkner, relict of the late Mr John Lees Faulkner, which occurred here yesterday at the ripe age of 91 years. Deceased had lived in the Tauranga district for 67 years. Her husband was a prominent resident in these parts before and after the Maori war. He was engagcd as a trader, and had a store at Otumoetai, where he purchased wheat, potatoes, gum, pigs, etc., from the Natives, and sold to them in return [for] clothing and food. He owned several trading vessels which were used in the transport of goods between Tauranga and Auckland. When the war broke out Mr Faulkner was compelled to transfer his storekeeping business to Tauranga, which was established on the site now occupied by Messrs Dickie and Mathieson's premises. He conducted the business on the Strand for some time, and then re-established the Otumoetai store, which he ran successfully for some years afterwards. Subsequently he retired from business and took up his residence on land at Otumoetai. Mrs Faulkner is survived by one son, Mr J D Faulkner who is the proprietor of a ferry service between the town and Maunganui. The funeral took place this afternoon, the last rites of the Church of England being performed at the graveside by the Rev. Canon Jordan. FAULKNER Accidentally killed on the launch Farina on August 7th, 1917, Captain John Daniel Faulkner, aged 59 years. [Bay Of Plenty Times, Volume XLV, Issue 689, 8 August 1917, Page 2] A TRAGIC END - Very great regret was expressed locally when the news reached Te Puke that Mr J. D. Faulkner, master of the wellknown launch Farina, had met with a fatal accident on Tuesday morning. It appears that the vessel left the Town Wharf for the Mount at the usual time, half past nine. As she was turning the north-eastern corner of the Railway Wharf she apparently came in contact with a projecting headstock on the wharf which crashed through the glass screen immediately in front of the helm and struck Mr Faulkner, crushing the top of his head against the inner partition. Mr Robert Faulkner, who was driving the launch, immediately went to his father's assistance, but death was instantaneous. The body was taken back to Tauranga, where an inquest was held. The following verdict was returned - That the deceased met his death by accidentally coming into contact with a dangerous headstock projecting from the railway wharf, and the jury adds a rider that steps should be taken to remove this danger. The late Mr Faulkner, who was 59 years of age. was born in Tauranga, and had conducted a ferry service to the Mount for many years past. He was most highly respected, and his untimed death is to be much deplored. 1917/279 Faulkner John Daniel 59Y [Te Puke Times, 10 August 1917, Page 3, Bay Of Plenty Times, Volume XLV, Issue 689, 8 August 1917, Page 3 and Bay Of Plenty Times, Volume XLV, Issue 689, 8 August 1917, Page 3, and Bay Of Plenty Times, Volume XLV, Issue 6897, 10 August 1917, Page 3]

FOX The tangi over the remains of the late Major Fox (Te Pohika Taranui) is proceeding at Maketu and several hundred Natives have already assembled there. The remains of the late chief will not be interred for some days yet as the arrival of some close relatives has to be awaited; the body will then be placed in a family burying place adjoining the deceased's large carved whare. Among those whose presence is now awaited are a cousin and aunt of the deceased, Katerina Te Kaho (Mrs D Asher), and her mother Rahera Te Nia, for whom the deceased always entertained a high regard. A part of Natives arrived here on Wednesday night to secure a large quantity of gunpowder which arrived for them by steamer and will be used in keeping up the firing of frequent salutes during the mourning ceremonies. It is said there has been nothing like the firing heard during the last few days, since the sanguinary battle at Te Tumu. Capt Mair who holds the Cross for distinguished bravery in the field in the Te Kooti raids, is assisting largely in the arrangements on behalf of Government, as it is desired to show marked respect to the memory of the deceased loyal chief, who like Major Kepa, (Wanganui), Major Wahawaha, (East Cape), Henare Te Pukuatlia, (Rotorua), and other loyal Arawa chiefs assisted greatly in saving the lives of settlers from the bloodthirsty followers of the arch-murderer Te Kooti. On the day of the funeral, as yet not fixed, it is intended to arrange for a display of unusual magnitude and to give the old warrior a burial with all military honours befitting his rank and services. FRASER It was our mournful duty to announce in an extra yesterday the demise of another of our gallant officers. Lieutenant-colonel James Fraser died at Tauranga on the 10th instant of a low typhoid fever, after an illness of 14 days. We purpose giving a short account of his services, which have been so valuable to the colony. James Fraser was of Scottish origin, being descended from the Lovat family. His parents settled in Canada and in course of time he entered her Majesty’s service as an ensign in the 73rd Regiment; with it he served in India during the Mutiny — for some time as adjutant of a wing of the regiment. On his return home, being anxious for active service he sold out with a view of joining the Federal army, but eventually came to New Zealand. In August 1864 he was appointed captain of military settlers in Napier. In October of that year Mr Volkner was murdered at Opotiki and a general rising took place along the East Coast. At that time the whole military force of the country was employed on the West Coast under General Cameron and with the exception of the force at Tauranga there were no Imperial troops on the East Coast. These were not moved and the work had to be done by the colonial forces. Mr McLean sent Captain Biggs off with thirty men to Waiapu and Fraser volunteered to join him. He accordingly embarked with sixty men and began his career of success. A series of skirmishes occurred before he was enable with the help of Morgan and his tribe to attack on Pakairomiromi. He led the attack in person, being the first man in the pa and getting his cap shot off. The rebels here suffered very heavily. Shortly afterwards he invested Pukemaire, a pa believed to be impregnable, but after hard fighting in the trenches, finding themselves in imminent danger, the Hauhaus evacuated the place, and retired to an interior fortress in Hick’s Bay. Biggs, his companion in arms, followed up with vigour, supported by Fraser, and the result was the surrender of 500 rebels. Immediately after this he was ordered to Poverty Bay, and here his soldierlike talents shone forth. He led not only the enemy but his own people to believe he intended to attack Pukeameonga. On this hill the hauhaus entrenched themselves strongly and Fraser, by a night march, left them on his left and attacked Wairangahika (a pa built close by the bishop’s house). The fighting here for two days was very severe and many lives were lost; but the upshot was that the enemy were defeated again with very heavy loss. Wairoa was the next scene of operations, and in concert with Ropata, Fraser invaded the Urewera country and chased the enemy right up to the Waikaremoana lake and fought him at Onepoto. Subsequently, on the occasion of a Hauhau attack on Napier in 1866 he intercepted one column of the enemy at Petane and defeated it with slaughter. The results of his campaign on the East Coast may be briefly summed up; 1,800 natives submitted and prisoners. 600 stand of arms taken — besides those destroyed. Several strongholds captured. Upwards of 200 of the enemy actually buried by us, with loss and casualties on our side only 31. For these services he was promoted to a Majority and appointed RM. On the formation of the Armed Constabulary Major Fraser received the command of No 1, the mounted division for Opotiki, and for the next eighteen months was constantly in the field. After taking his share in several expeditions into the Urewera country, including the skirmishes up the Waimane and capture of Otara and Te Ponga, was placed in garrison at Whakatane, until the news of Te Kooti’s landing again put him on the move. Prevented by stress of weather from reaching Colonel Whitmore in time for his advance he yet caught him up and was hotly engaged at the fight at Ruaheturi where he gallantly covered the retreat. It was shortly after this that his division was removed to the West Coast — a removal which occasioned much dispute in the House. He assumed command at Patea, when things were in a fearful state and his presence and decision quelled a mutiny, which might have had more serious circumstances. From this he was again brought round to the East Coast and assisted in the operations previous to and at the fall of Ngatapa. The position he held there was the most difficult of all and the indomitable pluck of himself and his men drove back under great disadvantages every sortie of the enemy. He was mentioned in despatches and promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel. From Poverty Bay round again to Whanganui was the next move. His was the nearest division to the enemy at Taruangaika. He was engaged in the marches and skirmishes consequent. He was prevented by sickness from taking part in the action at Otauto, but joined his division in time to start on a march round Mount Egmont. While on this march he was seized with an epileptic fit, which necessitated his being sent back to Patea. Joined again at Waitara and came round to East Coast once more. His division formed part of the centre column under Colonel St John in the march up the Urewera county and he specially distinguished himself by the coolness with which he led his men at the taking of Tatahoata pa. He remained with his division on the Rangitikei till the force was broken up, when No 1 went to Tauranga. On the remodelling of the Constabulary he was appointed to this district and in its command he died. Captain Fraser was emphatically an officer and a gentleman. He had a very good eye for ground and knew how to handle his men. A cool brave man he was enabled during the hottest fire to take advantage of every opening which was left to him. Where dash was required he led the way himself and had many a narrow escape. Wherever the report of his death reaches in New Zealand there will be found some old fellow soldier of his to reverence his memory. To say that his brother officers and men deeply regret his loss is using merely a common place phrase. They lament his untimely death and feel true grief. The country can follow their example as in the list of gallant and public spirited officers who have lost their lives while loyally doing their duty, none has deserved more than James Fraser.
