NEW ZEALANDERS ON ACTIVE SERVICE - FRUITS OF GALLIPOLI CAMPAIGN NOW APPARENT - London 8 Nov.
The Observer says: The immortal dead on Gallipoli have been vindicated. Australia, New Zealand, Britain and India realise that the heroes of 1915 wrought better than has hitherto been recognised. The Gallipoli expedition was the best holding force in Europe in proportion to its strength. It inflicted more damage than any other force and did more to melt down the strength of the Turk than all the fighting since. It was one of the greatest adventures of the British race.
NEW ZEALANDERS BRAVEST
General Charles ROSENTHAL of the American Staff declares that the New Zealanders are the finest type of troops on the British Front. In smartness and fighting efficiency they easily surpass all others.

During August Sir a J Godley recommended the following New Zealanders for Imperial commission:

While Major L M SHERA, MC, is in England on duty, Lieut G M RUSSELL, MC, has temporary rank as captain, Field Co., NZE.
Major W E ANDERSON, Ak Regt, Composite Reserve Battn, Sling, has been appointed adjutant with the rank of captain.

Corps.:
TWEEDY, Capt W G, MBE & NZMC, has relinquished the appointment of quartermaster at No.2 NZ General Hospital and he is succeeded by Capt G SANDHAM, MC, who has been quartermaster No.1 NZ Field Ambulance.
BARNITT, Sister K J and H CORMACK have gone to Egypt for duty, while Sister M McBETH, AARC, and Staff Nurse A B FINLAYSON are at present doing duty with the NZ Section, Queen’s Hospital, Sidcup.
McSWEENEY, Rifleman F, 3RB, has been repatriated to Switzerland from Germany for interment.
DENNISTON, Capt J D, has been promoted GSO2, from GSO 3, with the temporary rank of major while employed on the place of Major W GT Maxwell, MC, Gordon Highlanders.
HAMILTON, Lieut H, RNVR (Wellington), who has been attached for over a year to the Admiralty Experimental Station at Parkeston Quay, Essex, has recently been appointed official photographer at the station.
New Zealanders generally are making a good reputation for themselves in sports circles here and some of the cadets are in the rowing fours, three are in the cricket team and two are prominent at tennis. Eight out of the ten men in the team, at Hastings RAF Brigade, which won the tug-o-war, were New Zealanders.
PARRISH, 2nd Lieut A, RAF (Auckland), is in Egypt. He was formerly sergeant in the Auckland Mounted Rifles and was nominated in May 1917 for an Imperial commission.
THORP, Mr C Hampton, second son of Mr John W Thorp of Donburn, Paeroa, has been appointed director of press and publicity for the Australian YMCA in the United Kingdom and France, with headquarters in London.
WALLACE, Private H B, Middlesex Regt (Auckland) was reported as missing last March. He is now stated to be a prisoner of war.
EASTHER, Sgt F J, Auckland (acting company sergeant major) NZ Div Signal Co, has been posted to the Signal Service Training Centre at Bedford.
Cadets who have recently completed their training and are now posted to commissions in the NZFA are the following:

RICHMOND, Major J M, DSO, MC, RNZA, has been posted to command a battery and so relinquishes the appointment of brigade major, NZ Division Artillery, to which Major R MILES, DSO, MC, RNZA, has been appointed.

Lieutenant P HOVEY has just been promoted Captain. He did valuable work in organising the Records Department of the NZEF under the direction of Captain Donne.
The war has brought another tragedy to the much afflicted family of Lieut Colonel Sir Samuel & Lady Faire of Leicester. Their only son Clifford of the NZ Forces, fell in action in 1916; their grandson, the two year old child of their daughter Mrs STUART, died as a result of an accident in June last year; and now Lieutenant Reginald NEWSOME, MC, London Regt, whose engagement to their daughter Vera was announced last month, has died of wounds.
Sergeant James SAUNDERSON, a returned soldier and member of the guard on Somes Island, was found shot dead on Friday in the guardroom with a service revolver in one hand. Deceased left a note for Major Matheson and the staff. He was a single man, about 50 years of age.
Lieutenant Stuart SEDDON, son of the late Right Hon. R J S Seddon, who has been serving in Italy, is here on leave.
