BUSHMEN AT THE FRONT

New Zealand bushmen have been making a name for themselves in France. Private R E SHEWRY*, Taranaki’s champion axeman in a letter to his father at Tahora, gives some interesting experiences. He and Private S KENNEDY, world’s champion sawyer, gave an exhibition of sawing and chopping at the YMCA Hut at the Base in France. The wood was soft poplar and with their own tools they would have surprised the spectators. He asks for two NZ axe heads to be forwarded. In a big competition in which all the Empire was represented, Australia secured one win, Canada one and NZ three. The final axemen’s championship was between BUTLER of the French Forestry Dept. and himself, and he won. He had been offered a permanent job in the forests but declined it.
