Purua Special Settlement

In 1886 Arthur Masy, later the Belgian Consul at Auckland, took up land at Aponga, Purua near Whangarei. He persuaded a number of other Belgians from the Hainaut province to settle there. They arrived in small batches in the 1880s and 1890s, some returning home. The families were ABRAHAM, ANDRE (2), BATTARD, BENOIT (2), FELIX, HAUPTMANN, LABENNE, MONOYER (2) and Miss CLEMENTS. Another 50 to 60 families were expected to follow but this does not appear to have eventuated.

The Country. PURUA. Those who remember the Purua ten or even five years ago, and who have not visited it since, would now be surprised could they see the changes that have taken place. Where a few years ago the primeval forest, untouched by the hand of man, spread its foliage to the genial warmth of the semi-tropical sun, and the kauri, nikau palm, convolvulus and rata vine flourished and blossomed unseen, are now to be found extensive clearings down in grass, which grows so luxuriantly that the sleek cattle stand knee deep in the verdure. All along the banks of the lovely Maungawahine are to be seen the dwellings of the settlers, slabhouse, whare or tent, and around each are gardens, where the virgin soil so well repays its first cultivation that, to one accustomed to watch horticultural operations in less favored climes, the rich luxuriance of the crops is marvellous in the extreme. Chiefly noticeable among these spots reclaimed from the wilderness may be mentioned the homesteads of Messrs Carrington, Morfette, and Madame Andree. Here, careful industry has been munificently rewarded by bountiful nature, and the care bestowed in each case has been amply repaid. It requires a very short dip into the future to foresee that the Purua district will shortly become one of the richest farming districts of the north, and be to Whangarei what Epsom, Avondale and Takapuna are to Auckland —that is to say the source from which the metropolis of the county draws its supplies. Amongst the recent and expected arrivals are Mr Fagan and wife and family, from Whangarei, he having made arrangements for taking over the sections occupied by Mr C. Schneider (who is about to return to England), Mr Masy (Belgian Consul), and the wife and family of Mr Valentine, who has already been in the district for a year, and has during that time employed himself in a making a homestead for their retention.

HIKURANGI HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

There was also some splendid specimens of Connecticut tobacco, exhibited by Messrs Laben and Andre, of the Purua. These gentlemen are Belgians settled on the banks of the Maungawhiena the alluvial flats of which are admirably suited to the growth of the plant. They have over 5000 plants, and we believe intend to manufacture their own crop. Hitherto tobacco manufacture has not been a success in New Zealand. Vigorously as the plant grows, it has yet been found that, when properly cured and rendered sufficiently mild to suit the palate of a civilized being, it will not burn. To effect this necessary essential, even partially, we believe that the Manufacturing Company in Auckland have to mix with the home product one half of the American article. Whether the enterprising gentlemen on the banks of the Maungawhiena will be able to overcome this difficulty or not we cannot tell but we hope so.

WEDDING BELLS. STEWART—CARRINGTON. A very popular wedding was solemnised yesterday morning at the home of the bride's uncle, Mr J. Andre, of Tikipunga, when Mr Claude Stewart, only son of Mr Murdoch Stewart, of Whangarei Heads, was united in matrimony to Miss Clothilde Carrington, only daughter of Mr and Mrs Nelson Carrington, of Purua….the party sat down to a most sumptuous breakfast, the decorations for the occasion being the Stewart Tartan and the Belgian Flag, the national colours of the bride and bridegroom…

PURUA MEMORIAL. UNVEILING CEREMONY. AN IMPRESSIVE OCCASION. The Purua Hall was completely filled yesterday afternoon with the settlers of Purua and visitors on the occasion of the unveiling of the war memorial inscribed and presented to the district by Mr J. Andre, a former resident of Purua, but now of Tikipunga. The memorial, which was veiled with the Union Jack, is unique inasmuch as it not only bears the names of those who took part in the great war, but also the principal engagements of the four war zones, those of Gallipoli being at the top, of France in the left margin, of Belgium in the right and of Palestine at the bottom…

CROWN LANDS. A considerable number of applications were received at the Lands Office yesterday for second-class surveyed land in Whangarei, Waitemata, Manukua, Bay of Islands, Ohinemuri, and Hokianga counties. The lands were opened on Wednesday, and dealt with yesterday by Mr. Kensington in the absence of the commissioner. The areas were selected principally under the occupation tenure and the cash system. A ballot was held at eleven a.m. for cases in which more than one application was received for the same section, and the following is the result: —Section 159, Parish of Waipareira, Thomas Bennett; section 27, Block 1. Purua Survey District, A. Battard section 75, same block, C. Ferguson section 82, Parish of Okura, G. V. Armstrong.

SUICIDE AT PAPAKURA. OLD MAN ENDS HIS LIFE. Intimation was received by Constable Waugh on Sunday (says our Papakura correspondent) that an elderly settler, named Francois Joseph Benoit, living on the Wairoa Road, had committed suicide by shooting himself. An inquest into the circumstances of the death was held on Monday afternoon by Mr. Duncan McLennan, J.P. Evidence was brought to show that the deceased had been much disturbed lately, that he was in indifferent health, and that he was subject to fits of despondency — result, it is thought, of fever and ague, from which lie had suffered before his arrival in the Dominion. A verdict of suicide during temporary insanity was returned.

APONGA. Mr Felix is busy building a store, and expects to commence business in a few days. To wish success to the undertaking would be equivalent to wishing the downfall of the present store, as there is not business in the district sufficient to warrant the storekeeper wearing a necktie on a week day. The immediate and only effect the second store will have will be to drive what little business there may be away to Kamo or Whangarei.

PURUA SETTLEMENT. NEW SETTLERS. The new settlers for Purua, now on their way from Belgian under the charge of Mr Hauptmann, are expected to arrive within a fortnight. There are about a dozen families, and most of the new corners have a fair amount of capital to start with. Purua is becoming quite a model settlement and is making more material progress than any district in the North. The Belgian settlers at Purua are a fine class of people, and we shall be glad to welcome more like them.

Northern Advocate, 18 March 1893, Page 5

PURUA. The fine new building for Mr Hauptmann is now finished and the builders, Messrs Wolf and Holman, are to be congratulated for the manner in which they have carried out the work. The house contains 12 rooms, and forms really two buildings, the back portion joining the main building at the corner. There are 203 feet of verandah, going all round the main building. In the latter are situated the bath room, kitchen, store room, dairy, and servants' room. In the main building are dining room (24 x 18 ft), sitting room (12 x 15) and four bed rooms, and a six feet hall.

To effect this necessary essential, even partially, we believe that the Manufacturing Company in Auckland have to mix with the home product one half of the American article. Whether the enterprising gentlemen on the banks of the Maungawhiena will be able to overcome this difficulty or not we cannot tell but we hope so.

Purua Special Settlement. SURVEYING THE LAND FOR OCCUPATION. Mr Simpson, District Engineer, has received instructions to survey the Government land at Purua into areas suitable for the settlers whom the Belgian Consul, Mr Masy, is introducing from Belgium. As stated in a previous issue, about 60 families have already arranged to come from Europe and settle at Purua as soon as the land is surveyed. This will be chiefly a Belgian settlement, though some Frenchmen and a few of other nationalities have also decided to take up land at Purua. If the settlers who are coming are of the same class as the Belgians already settled at Purua, the settlement will be a great success, as those we have in the district have proved most excellent settlers. They give one the impression that they have come to stay and intend to make this their home. They are cheerful and speak of the district and of their chances of success in the most hopeful manner. Their houses are comfortable and very natty, and the little flower and vegetable gardens show great taste and a thorough knowledge of the work. We hope that the Government will deal liberally with Mr Masy in enabling these people to get nothing but good land and on bottom terms. A more promising settlement was never started in this Colony.

APONGA.WEDDING BELLS,A quiet wedding of much local interest was solemnised at Devonport, Auckland, on the 31st ultimo, at the residence of Mr and Mrs W. Hewitt, The contracting parties were Mrs J. D. Langridge, ex-postmistress, and Mr W. A.[U A] Monoyer, third son of Mr and Mrs Martin Monoyer of Merch-ilez- Ecoussne, Belgium. The Rev. J. Stewart conducted the ceremony. The 'bride and bridegroom spent their honeymoon at Rotorua and returned last Thursday to take up their abode amongst us. SUCCESSFUL WEDDING SOCIAL. In response to invitations issued by Mr and Mrs Monoyer to celebrate their wedding a large muster was in attendance at the public hall on the evening of Thursday, the 19th inst, when everything went off splendidly. The dancing floor was specially prepared and was in perfect order. The hall decorations, were attended to by a willing and energetic committee of friends of the bridal couple, and the elaborate designing came in for general admiration. The ceiling decorations, consisting of a network of lycopodium, with flowers interspersed and a large wedding bell swinging from the centre, together with the effective nikau and floral decorations adorning the walls, merited the commendatory expressions used. The stage decoration was appropriately designed to represent England and Belgium. Mrs Sparke (piano) supplied excellent dance music and was relieved at intervals by Mrs Tremain and Messrs A. Drake, and Rosanoski. Mr R. D. Finlayson made an efficient M.C. Mr J A. Finlayson in response to the request of the guests present, very fittingly thanked the host and hostess for the very pleasant evening spent, and briefly referred to Mrs Monoyer's esteemed services to the district, more especially in connection with the local postal work of the district. Mr Monoyer also came in for deserved eulogy by the speaker, who stated that Mr Monoyer, though failing to take an active interest in public matters, could always be relied upon to give a generous contribution to any just cause. In wishing Mr and Mrs Monoyer a long and happy voyage of wedded life Mr Finlayson remarked, that, like himself, he thought Mr Monoyer had left the happiest event of his life to a rather late period, but assured Mr Monoyer that it was better late than never. General applause was immediately followed by three ringing cheers, and the voicing of "For They Are Jolly Good Fellows." During the evening Master F. Cotterill contributed a vocal solo "Way Down on the Old Swanee," and responded to an encore. Fruit served round at intervals and an excellent supper at midnight proved very acceptable.

The war is brought very hear to us in Purua, as our Belgian friends have many relations, such as sons, daughters, grandchildren and other near ones in Belgium, and no news whatever has been received since the commencement of the war, so that their anxiety is intense, especially when such awful reports appear, in the press concerning the treatment that unoffending civilians, men, women, and children, receive at the hands of the most degraded soldiery of the present time. Attila and his hordes were bell-toppered, kid-gloved, go-to-meeting milksops in comparison with the German savage.
