SAUNDERS OF CLAYDON, OXFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND TO MOUNT ROSKILL, AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND

Thomas Wells SAUNDERS was born around 1810 in Wappenham, Northamptonshire. HE married Elizabeth WHETTON and they had three (known) sons;

John married Mary HALIDAY (HOLIDAY) in 1859 at Culworth, Northamptonshire. Their eight children, six sons and two daughters were all born there. In 1875 the family came to New Zealand on the ALUMBAGH and settled in Mount Roskill, Auckland. Their eldest son Samuel did not sail with them to New Zealand and arrived sometime between the 1881 UK census and marrying in New Zealand in 1919. It is also thought that the above Samuel (born 1844) also came to New Zealand thought this has yet to be proved.

John and Mary are buried at St Andrews Church, Epsom, Auckland.

John Thomas SAUNDERS married Helen WRIGHT at Pokeno, south of Auckland in 1893. John was manager of the Ambury Point farm at Mangere. Their older children can remember watching the sailing ships coming up the Manakau Harbour to Onehunga wharf. Thomas used to row the cream cans over to the factory at Onehunga. Around 1900 the family moved to Hawera, South Taranaki where they bought a farm at Turuturu Road. The family was:
