GOODSON, ELIZABETH ANN nee SOUTHCOMBE

 

Elizabeth Southcombe was born on the 6 September 1834 at Wimpole Street, London.

In 1852 she married in London, Matthew John Goodson, a successful tea and coffee merchant.  On the 29 April 1853, after selling the business and some land, the couple boarded the SS Cresswell and sailed from Gravesend, arriving in New Plymouth on the 25 August 1853.

 

From New Plymouth, they moved to Wanganui,  buying the Kai Iwi Farm from Mr R St Hill, the resident magistrate.  They also bought other property around Wanganui, and here their family was born.

 

In 1871,  the  family moved to the 1800 acre Waihi Downs property on the north west side of Hawera.  Matthew travelled between the two properties until selling the Wanganui farm to John Treweek in 1876. 

 

The children of Matthew and Elizabeth contributed much to the Hawera community.  Charles Goodson with his interest in parks and reserves.  Emma Goodson as a pioneer wife at Whakamara when she married John Wemyss Scott.  Jack Goodson through his wife Catherine nee Connell's musical abilities.  Ada Goodson who married local lawyer, Richard Dawson Welsh and helped with many worthy causes.

 

Elizabeth Goodson died on the 4 November 1917 at Hawera aged 84 years, and is buried in the Hawera cemetery.  The children of Elizabeth and Matthew contributed to a memorial stained glass window at St Mary's Anglican Church, Hawera, to their parents memory.
