The 10 April 1910 marked the turning of the 'first sod' of the Tauranga to Te Puke section of the East Coast Main Trunk Railway. It was performed by the Minister of Public Works, the Hon Roderick McKenzie on the government reserve between Matapihi and Mauao, Mount Maunganui.
That evening a "complimentary banquet" was held at McDowell's Hall in Te Puke and over 127 local men and visitors attended. The catering was entrusted to Mrs D L Smith, proprietress of "The Club".
