KIVELL, Able Seaman Frank — When the cutter from HMS Philomel was swamped in heavy seas, Able Seaman ANDERSON, a weak swimmer, got into difficulties. AB Kivell, who had reached safety, immediately turned back to help him. On his way back to the cutter, AB Kivell found Able Seaman CASTEL, also in difficulties with his foot caught in the ropes of the mast. AB Kivell cleared the ropes but was hit on the head by the mast. He went on and eventually brought AB Anderson ashore in an exhausted condition. It was recommended ‘….that his services be recognised in the usual manner by the award of the Life Saving Medal….’

NURSING STAFF
Miss THURSTON, has been granted leave of absence from Christchurch Hospital to take charge of the Walton-on-Thames Hospital. A native of England, she has been in NZ for 16 years and trained at the Wellington Hospital. She was Matron on Greymouth Hospital for 2 ½ yrs and has been in Christchurch for 7 ½ yrs. Sister Rose MUIR, who succeeds Miss Thurston at Christchurch, was trained at Blenheim Hospital.

ANDERSON, Trooper W D, Otago Mounted Rifles, died at Rotorua on Saturday as a result of falling into a scalding pool at Ohinemutu. He left NZ with the Main Body, was wounded in the abdomen at Sari Bair on August 7 and returned to NZ in the Willochra on 29th October 1915 and admitted to the George V Hospital on 21 March 1916. His body was conveyed by the 6.15am train to Wellington on Tuesday for interment. About 100 men paid a last tribute by falling in on the railway platform and saluting as the train moved off.
