GUESTS OF THE KING - NEW ZEALANDERS HONOURED- VISIT TO BUCKINGHAM PALACE

London Feb.27

A series of weekly entertainments for overseas soldiers has been arranged by Their Majesties the King and Queen. To the first of them, 100 guests, including representatives of all the Overseas Dominions, were invited to Buckingham Palace to see a presentation of Captain Besley’s cinematograph pictures of "The Amazon and unexplored South America" and to take tea. All the guests were in uniform. They were taken by Palace officials to the State Ballroom where the cinematograph display took place. The Kind and the Queen, Princes Mary and the Duke of Connaught were present. The only trace of ceremony about the visit was the formal presentation of each officer. At the conclusion of the entertainment, the King and Queen, with the other members of the Royal Family, moved about freely among the guests, greeting all in turn and chatting till it was time to adjourn to the household diningroom for tea. About a score of ladies assisted as waitresses and later the visitors left the Palace after a very pleasant afternoon.

WOUNDED MEN RETURN

A draft of invalided soldiers returned to Auckland on Tuesday from service abroad. The 123 personnel were in the charge of Captain E S HARSTON, Wgtn Battn, Sister R M Gray, NZ Hospital ship and a number of non-commissioned officers returning for commissions were also included in the contingent. There were no cot cases and only two hospital cases, one requiring treatment at Rotorua and one at the Waikato Sanatorium. Special interest attaches to the arrival of this draft of soldiers, by reason of the fact that it is largely composed of men of the Main Body and early reinforcements. A large number have been in hospital in England since the Somme battle of last year. Captain HARSTON was one of those who saw strenuous service on Gallipoli, being at one time of particularly heavy fighting, the senior surviving officer of the Wellington Battalion. Three of the men — Sgt Major ROSS, Pahiatua, Sgt L R NICHOLAS, Woodville and Sgt R ANGEL, Whangarei — hold the Military Medal for gallant service.

RETURNING FOR COMMISSIONS

ANGEL, Sgt R, Whangarei; FINLAYSON, QMS J, Okoroire; NICHOLAS, Sgt L R, Woodville; RAINES, Sgt H J, Southland; ROSS, Sgt Major, Pahiatua.
