TRAVIS, Sgt Richard Charles, DCM, MM, Otago Regt, has been awarded the Victoria Cross for most conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty. He was killed in action 24 hours after the deeds which won him the award. The Defence Office is endeavouring to find a blood relation of the late Sergeant who was living at Ryal Bush, Southland, when he enlisted. It is believed he was born at Gisborne. He left his home when quite a young man and went to America and upon his return to NZ, vainly endeavoured to find his parents but at last came to the conclusion that they were dead.
