McLENNAN, Private A, son of James McLennan of Eureka, has been awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for gallantry in the field.
Writing to friends in Hamilton, QSM DARKE expresses gratification at hearing that Chaplain Captain HOUCHEN has been awarded the Military Cross. "If anyone deserves it he does. All the boys who come in contact with Capt Houchen swear by him. He was everywhere doing all he could to secure the wounded, hauling them to some sort of safety until they could be removed by the stretcher bearers, diving down German dugouts getting blankets to cover them, helping walking cases down to the dressing station and assisting the doctors and rendering first aid. He was too brave, not taking any notice of the shells which were exploding around him."
Two members of the Lines Dept of the Hamilton Post Office, Privates P McQUILLAN and E HOLLYWOOD, are amongst those who have been awarded the Military Cross. Pte McQUILLAN for laying lines under extremely heavy fire during the battle of the Somme. He was born in Christchurch and educated at Marist Brothers school.
Pte E HOLLYWOOD was the son of Mr Hollywood, Postmaster, Te Aroha, aged about 25, earned his medal in Egypt where during the Turkish attack east of Suez, rode 55 miles in one day laying telegraph lines. He was personally complimented by General CHAUVEL. He had many marvelous escapes from death. On his return he was cheered by the whole of his regiment.
READ, L W, Lieut, First Batt., Essex Regt, son of Mr Wm Read, Pencarrow Ave, Mt Eden, was killed in action in France on 9 December. Lt READ, who was 22 years of age, was on the staff of the United Insurance Co. prior to enlistment. He left NZ as a Corporal with one of the early NZ contingents and fought for some time at Gallipoli. His promotion through the non-commissioned grades was rapid and eventually he was given a commission in the Essex Regt. Two of his brothers have also enlisted, one being already on the way to Europe while the other is a Sergeant in a reinforcement just about to be despatched.
Two sons of the late Mr W C FITZGERALD of Wellington, hold the King’s commission and are engaged on active service in France and a daughter has enrolled as a nurse. Lt Roy James FITZGERALD, who was a marine engineer prior to the war, is serving in the Gloucester Regt and has been awarded the Military Cross for his conduct in the advance on the Somme. Captain Maurice FITZGERALD is serving in the Royal Engineers and Nurse Eileen FITZGERALD is under orders to be ready to leave NZ for the front this month.

DEPARTING SOLDIERS
SHARLAND — on the eve of his departure for England as a Lieutenant in the Aviation Corps, Mr F J Sharland was bidden farewell by the members of the Northern Pharmaceutical Assn at a smoke concert. In recognition of Mr Sharland’s assistance to the Auckland pharmacists as an organiser, he was presented with an illuminated address and a purse of sovereigns.
Eight members of the staff of Sharland & Co Ltd are about to leave for the front — Messrs G EATON, R M ELLIS, N C HALE, A N PROBERT, A C DOUGHTY, A LEE and W ANDERSON, as members of NZ’s army and Mr C R Edwards to carry on field service work for the YMCA. At a gathering of the company’s employees on the eve of the holidays, the manager, Mr Frank Renshaw, in the name of the staff, presented each of the departing colleagues with a wristlet watch.
SCOTT, Mr Albert, of the staff of the Electrical Construction Co of NZ, has been presented by the company and its employees with a wristlet watch on the eve of his departure on active service.
JACKSON — The employees of Messrs F E Jackson & Co Ltd, gave a send off on Saturday to Mr Gainor Jackson, who is leaving for the front on January 3. Mr H S Rennick, senior representative of the firm, on behalf of the staff presented Mr Jackson with a silver wristlet watch. Mr Gainor Jackson is the fifth man to enlist from this warehouse.
GOODMAN — the warehouse staff of the Northern Boot & Shoe Co presented Mr P R GOODMAN, on Thursday afternoon, with a wristlet watch on the eve of his departure for Trentham. The manager, Mr T Hodgson, made the presentation. Mr Goodman, who has been a member of the staff for the last six years, also received cheques from the company and manager.

Frontiersman G SYME of the Pouatu Troop, has been awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal and the honour to their comrade will be appreciated by members of the troop. He served with his battalion at Gallipoli and has been in France ever since the NZ forces went there.
