MILITARY MOVEMENTS
Two members of NZEF who were capture by the Germans and afterwards transferred to Switzerland, have now reached England and are in King George’s Hospital. They are Privates F P DOYLE and H POOLE.
Saddler R W BLACK (Auckland) served in the Boer War with the Queensland Contingent and came from California early in 1915 to join King Edward’s Horse. He is now with that regiment in Italy.
Major L H JARDINE, MC, from second in command of the 4th Battn, NZRB, is transferred to the 2nd, and Major N F SHEPHERD becomes second in command of the 4th.
Lieutenant J S B BRUGES is appointed a platoon commander in the 5th Battn, NZRB.
Captain S J E CLOSEY, MC, has returned to the NZRB from commanding an entrenching battalion.
Captain A C FINLAYSON of the NZ Machine-gun Corps, is promoted major and given command of a company in the field. He is succeeded as officer commanding a machine-gun reserve depot, by Captain C G HAYTER, who has lately been commanding a company in the field.
The Rev M A MURPHY, C.F., at the Artillery Reserve Depot, goes to the 1st Infantry Brigade in the place of the Rev P J MINOGUE, who is sick.
The Rev J C MURPHY, from the Rifle Brigade Reserve Depot, goes to the Divisional Artillery; the Rev H CLARK, MC, from the Rifle Brigade to the Base Depot, and the Rev J D SMITH, from the Base Depot to the Rifle Brigade.
Captain O OPIE, RNZA, is now G.S.O.3, in place of Major D E Bremner, MC, who has been appointed Brigade Major to the Rifle Brigade.
The following promotions in the Field Artillery are announced: Captains C H G JOPLIN and P J ELLIS, MC, to be majors; Lieuts G LYON, MC and H N WEBSTER, to be Captains
Lieut G RIDDELL is now commanding a company of an entrenching battalion, with the rank of captain, in place of Captain D W McCLURG, NZRB.
Captain A S MUIR (Gisborne), who served with the Main Body in Gallipoli and has been at the front continuously ever since, has relinquished the post of adjutant to the 1st Battalion, Wellington Regt, and has been appointed D.A.Q.M.G. to the division, in succession to Major H E AVERY, D.S.O., who is promoted A.A. and Q.M.G.
Trooper J F STEWART, of King Edward’s Horse (Thames), is reported wounded.
The resignation of Captain Leo. M MYERS (Auckland) of the King’s Rifle Corps, is gazetted. Captain Myers will retain the honorary rank of captain and has retired for the purpose of devoting his energies to the organization of the Riflemen’s Aid Society.
Mr Harry N HOLMES, F.R.G.S., who was for eight years general secretary of the YMCA in Wellington, was among those who recently received the honour of O.B.E.
Lieutenant G B L PORTER of the British West Indies Regt, was re-attested with the NZEF as a lieutenant in the Canterbury Regt.
The Rev Cuthbert T MACLEAN, MC, Auckland, now holds the rank of lieutenant-colonel in the Royal Air Force. He served in the Royal Fusiliers in the early days of the war, for which he got the 1914 Star and, after being wounded, was transferred to the RFC. He is an old boy of Wanganui College and has been in London on leave from France.
Sergeant J M CARPELL of the Auckland Mounted Rifles, recently attached to D.H.Q. in France, has been discharged from the NZEF in England to take a position in the Russian Dept of the Ministry of Information.
Captain J SEABROOK, RAF, Auckland, has been posted to the Middle East RAF, and has left for Egypt. He has been in the service for more than two years and his experience includes about a year’s flying in France.
