KETTLE, Lieut Desmond F s/o Mr C C Kettle, S.M., of Auckland, died while fighting on the Gallipoli Peninsula. Details have just been received from an officer who participated in the charge in which Lieut Kettle was killed: "It is with feelings more of pride than of condolence that I pen these few lines in reference to Lieut Desmond Kettle’s glorious end. One can rest assured he died upholding all our highest ideals of manhood and traditions of our race. He was badly wounded in the charge but went on gallantly leading his men until the last. The next day his body was found in a Turkish trench with two dead Turks. We have every reason to be proud of him — he died a death few are privileged to die. He is, indeed, a hero."
