NEW ZEALAND DISASTERS AND TRAGEDIES
FEATHERSTON CAMP RIOT, STATE HIGHWAY TWO, FEATHERSTON, WAIRARAPA
THURSDAY 25 FEBRUARY 1943
On Thursday 25 February 1943 a riot broke out at the military camp, just outside Featherston. It had been re-established from First World War use to house Japanese Prisoners of War.
Forty-eight Japanese prisoners were killed, and a New Zealand guard - WALTER ALLAN PELVIN - died from the effects of a richocet shot.
News of the riot was kept quiet due to war-time censorship, and fears that their may be reprisals in the Japanese camps overseas.
Thanks so much to Peter Cooke, of the - DEFENCE OF NEW ZEALAND STUDY GROUP - for his help with the names of those killed.
Further information on those killed is in his book Roll of New Zealand's Second World War Dead - DONZ, 2018, ISBN 978-0-473-45735-8. It lists 13177 names with analysis who, how, where, when and why they died.
