REPORT ON JOHN HASLETT
06 OCTOBER 1895

EXTRACT FROM THE ASHBURTON GUARDIAN - Monday, October 7, 1895

DROWNED IN THE RAKAIA

An accident occurred in the Rakaia River on Sunday, by which a lad named John Haslett lost his life. It appears that deceased and another lad named Michael Sheehan had been rabbiting on the north side of the river, and about 5 30pm, intending to return to their homes at Newton, attempted to cross the river at a dangerous spot, both riding on one horse. The current being too strong, they were swept away. This happened about three miles above Rakaia town, and Sheehan, being a strong swimmer managed to get out, but Haslett was carried away by the stream and drowned. A strong search party was out till 10pm last night. The body was found at 6am this morning, half a mile from where the accident occurred.

An inquest will be held on the body at 9am on Tuesday.
