KAIMAI AIR CRASH
3 JULY 1963
On the 3 July 1963 NAC Flight 441 was lost on a flight from Auckland to Tauranga with a loss of 23 lives - 20 passengers and 3 crew. Later that night wreckage was spotted in the Kaimai Ranges. It was the first time that a helicopter had been used in New Zealand to help with Search and Rescue.
A memorial to the crash was dedicated on 5 July 2003, the 40th anniversary of the crash. It is at Gordon, near Matamata.
