SS KAIRAKI
LOST AT SEA
25/26 SEPTEMBER 1914
OFF POINT ELIZABETH, GREYMOUTH

The Kairaki sailed from Wellington at 3.30am on the 24 September for Greymouth on the West Coast of the South Island. That night a howling westerly storm raged. At 11am on the 26 September the postmaster received a message stating that the beach at Ten Mile was strewn with wreckage, consisting of merchandise and ship's fittings. A search found the wreckage of the steamer in 12 fathoms of water about three miles from the big rock at Point Elizabeth and five miles from Greymouth. Seventeen men were lost. GITTOS & NOBLE were sons of Greymouth residents. A youth aged about 17 yrs, named Marriott MYLROI was also aboard. His parents resided at Runanga. [AWN 1.10.1914]

In addition to the list of the crew of the Kairaki sent out from Grey- mouth, the following were also on board: Second mate KUNDLON, who signed on at Wellington in place of S TRICE; A.B.'S P. JOHNSON, T. SMITH, G. HEDGES, and W. HALLIS; ordinary seaman, Cyril JOHNSON; firemen, A., TAYLOR, W. GARRATT,. and F. HYPUS; cook, J. R. COLLINGWOOD; steward, W. GARRATT (son of fireman Garratt).
