MONDAY 23 MAY 1966
The MV Kaitawa, was a coal collier on its way from Westport to Portland, Whangarei with 2,957 tons of coal.
During the night of the 23 May 1966 the ship ran into heavy seas approaching the Pandora Bar and the crew sent a MAYDAY request for help. However contact was lost and no more was heard of the ship until wreckage began floating ashore. As no one survived it is assumed that the ship was overcome by heavy seas and sank.
