OVER MILFORD SOUND, SOUTHLAND
SATURDAY 30 DECEMBER 1989

On Saturday 30 December 1989, Southland's worst air accident occurred when two Cessna 207s collided mid-air over Milford Sound. The propeller of the Milford Sound Scenic Flights Cessna ZK-DAX apparently severed a wing of the Air Fiordland Cessna ZK-DQF which then fell into the sea. All on board, the pilot and six Japanese tourists were all killed. The Cessna ZK-DAXC then landed safely. The aircraft had converging flight paths but neither pilot could see the other.
