NEW ZEALAND DISASTERS AND TRAGEDIES
SINKING OF MV MARANUI
OFF MERCURY BAY, NORTH ISLAND
THURSDAY 13 JUNE 1968

The MV Maranui sank in heavy weather off Mercury Bay on 13 June 1968 with the loss of nine of her 15-man crew. She was on passage from Lyttelton to Auckland when her cargo of wheat shifted allowing water to enter the ship via uncovered and unplugged air pipes.
