PRESS, VOLUME LV, ISSUE 16457, 26 FEBRUARY 1919
Norfolk Island, the remotest dependency of the Commonwealth and the oldest British settlement in the Southern Hemisphere, with the exception of Sydney, has a fine record of war service (says the Melbourne Argus). In his report for 1917-1918 the Administrator (Mr M. V. Murphv) states that 75 men had enlisted with the Australian and New Zealand Imperial Forces. Excluding 114 Melanesians in training at the mission station and five tourists, the population on December 31st, 1917, was only 761, of whom 337 were males and 427 females. The sum of £1580 had been collected for patriotic funds.
