On the 06 January 1909 the Rio Loge departed Kaipara with a load of timber for Dunedin. By the 14th January she was in the company of the ketch Isabella De Fraine and schooner Waratah off the coast of Banks Peninsula. However a southerly gale came up and the three ships parted company.
