SINKING OF THE SCOW RANGI
OFF RAKINO ISLAND, NEAR TORBAY, NORTH SHORE, AUCKLAND

The scow RANGI was on a voyage from Omokoroa, near Tauranga to Auckland with a load of pine logs when it capsized off Rakino Island in the Hauraki Gulf.

Of her complement of six, four members of the crew were drowned when the ship's dinghy was swamped about a mile and a half off Torbay. One of the survivors, Donald Woodroffe was on a holiday voyage as a guest of Captain Petersen.

The RANGI was eventually salvaged and repaired.
