HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES ELECTORAL ROLL
TE PUKE AND MAKETU NAMES FROM TAURANGA ROLL
1881

The 1881 New Zealand election was the first to include ALL males 21 and over who either owned property or had lived in New Zealand for one year and in an electorate for at least six months*. Maori who owned property on individual titles were also eligble to register as electors in any European electorate where they were so qualified. One man one vote was not introduced until 1889. In 1893 all women of 21 and over were eligble to vote and Maori electorates were introduced. * This would explain why the Lady Jocelyn settlers who arrived in Tauranga in January 1881 are not included.
