WAIPU CALEDONIAN SOCIETY. ROLL OF HONOUR
The roll of honour containing the names of members and ex-members of the Waipu Caledonian Society who saw active service during the war, was recently unveiled by Major Frazerhurst in the presence of one of the largest assemblies which have ever taken place in the settlement. The roll is hung in Coronation Hall and it is a piece of work which cannot fail to prove of great interest to the members and the general public and is well worth description.
The heavy oak frame by which the roll is protected is about 4ft ft 9in in depth and about 3ft 6in wide. Occupying the position of honour at the head of the roll is the Scotch flag and immediately beneath it the Caledonian Society's badge. Then follow the names of the members painted by hand in two colours. A wide margin surrounds the actual roll.
The right and left hand top corners are occupied respectively by Union Jack and N.Z. Ensign with a beautiful spray of clematis underneaath. Artistically arranged down the left hand margin are illustrations of the Waipu monument, New Zealand nikau palms, and an Egyptian soldier with the pyramids in the background. The right hand margin is occupied by views of the Waipu ferro-concrete bridge, The New Zealand punga, and a scene in France.
"The landing" occupies the middle of the base with pohutukawa bloom on either side. The workmanship is excellent and thoroughly in keeping with the appropriate design. The honors roll, however, is of principal interest. It contains no fewer than 91 names of members who served in the war. They are as follows:
