On the 17th June, 1903, being the 60th anniversary, we published, in a special supplement, the full narrative of the Wairau Massacre, for the New Zealand Company in London, which was printed in the Nelson Examiner on 23rd December, 1843. It was supplied to us by Mr C. Janion, of Wellington, who was for several years in the sixties overseer of the Nelson Examiner. Mr Janion has lately paid another visit to the historic spot of Tua Marina, and having copied in full the names of the persons who fell in that unhappy event, with the titles, professions, etc., of the principal actors which he thinks may not have appeared in print before—kindly supplies us with the full text. It will doubtless be interesting to all our readers:

Who were killed near this spot By Natives of New Zealand, On the 17th June, 1843. F. Wakefield, Del. March, 1860

The four to nine Maori killed were not named, however it is known that one of them was Rongo, the wife of Te Rangihaeata. She was a daughter of Te Rauparaha.

Halifax papers mention the death, at the age of 75, of H. Hughlings, the uncle of Mr Samuel Jackson, solicitor, Auckland. Hughlings was present at the Wairau massacre, being then on a visit to New Zealand as the representative of intending emigrants from Halifax. Parkinson, his companion, is still living in Halifax.

The diary kept by Thomas Parkinson (aged 18) when he traveled to New Zealand on the Bombay and was traveling with a his employer Harry Hughlings who was dealing in land in New Zealand. Hughlings was something of a land speculator and had bought in England quite a lot of sections around Nelson, Wellington, and Wanganui.
