NEW ZEALAND WAR MEMORIALS AND ROLLS OF HONOUR
WARKWORTH, RODNEY, AUCKLAND
Location: Church Hill, Warkworth. The memorial was relocated to here in 1931 from its original location at the intersection of Queen and Elizabeth Streets. The obelisk does not include the names of the fallen but a Field of Remembrance is also on the same site.
THIS MONUMENT WAS ERECTED
BY THE
INHABITANTS OF WARKWORTH
STREAMLANDS, POHUEHUE
MAHURANGI HEADS &
MULLET POINT. IN MEMORY OF
THOSE WHO, FROM THESE
DISTRICTS, GAVE THEIR LIVES
IN THE GREAT WAR
1914 - 1919.
THEIRS WAS THE PRIVILEGE OF SACRIFICE
THEIR WILLING SELVES THE OFFERING - THE PRICE
DEMANDED TO MAKE FIERCE THE CLEANSING FIRE.
THEY GAVE THEIR ALL, THE HIGHEST PRICE TO GIVE.
THEIR PRECIOUS LIVES, THAT WE IN PEACE MIGHT LIVE.
THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD AS WE THAT ARE LEFT GROW OLD
AGE SHALL NOT WEARY THEM, NOR THE YEARS CONDEMN
AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN AND IN THE MORNING
WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.
THERES NONE OF THESE SO LONELY
AND POOR OF OLD
BUT, DYING, HAS MADE US RARER
GIFTS THAN GOLD.
REMEMBERING THESE DEAD, LET THE LIVING BE HUMBLE.
THIS MONUMENT WAS ERECTED ON ARMISTICE DAY 1921.
